Elko Committee Against Domestic Violence (CADV) has been in Elko since 1980 and Harbor House was completed in 1998 and has been a shelter to families in crisis for 20 years. We are asking our community to help us raise $100,000 to give our safe house some much needed improvements and repairs.
The organization will be running a capital campaign, called 20 for 20, throughout 2018 to improve the inside and outside of Harbor House – the only domestic violence shelter within 30,000-square miles. After 20 years of use, the safe house needs many new things from new paint on the walls to an improved kitchen. We are hoping every person who donates to Harbor House, asks 20 of their friends to also contribute to our organization, hence the name of the campaign, 20 for 20. Anyone who donates $400 or more will be added to our sponsor wall.
The purpose of CADV is to prevent and eliminate stalking, domestic, family and sexual violence in Elko, White Pine and Eureka counties. CADV staff provides confidential services, advocacy and community outreach throughout the tri-county area.
When clients stay in Harbor House, CADV provides them with all their basic needs – a safe place to live while they are becoming self-sufficient, food, and supplies. We have a limited budget to buy items for clients, so we focus on necessities first.
Luxuries such as hygiene products for both men and women and common household cleaning supplies sometimes go unfulfilled. Clothing is a necessity we have a difficult time providing. While many people donate clothes, often we don’t have the right sizes for clients and new undergarments are rarely thought of by donors. Clients often need underwear, socks, bras, and pajamas. We just don’t have enough room in our clothing closet to keep a large variety of sizes. Gift cards or Chamber Checks are rarely donated, but these are some of the best ways for us to solve that problem.
Many of our victims are not alone when they come into shelter because they bring their children. We are in the process of replacing the toys and items that help clients and their children feel comfortable while in Harbor House, which includes changing our collection of VHS tapes over to DVDs.
We are asking individuals and businesses to donate items, funds or services to help improve Harbor House. Anyone who would like to donate items or services can call the office 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 738-6524, or send a check to CADV at P.O. Box 2531, Elko, NV 89803.
